After the incredible success of our first SW Skinny, held in Bude, Cornwall on 19th May 2019, we were so keen to get back to being #nudeinbude once again in aid of mental health awareness and support!  Unfortunately, the 2020 and 2021 events had to be cancelled, as were so many charitable fundraisers during the Corona virus crisis.  But, due to the generosity of our followers, we still managed to donate a healthy £1351 to Mind.  This means, in total so far, this event has raised a staggering £6663 to support those in need!.

In May 2019, over 150 swimmers came together on the final day of Mental Health Awareness Week for an experience that will not be forgotten!

The SW Skinny is primarily an event for those who hold mental health issues close to their heart.  At this event, people come together to make friends, share stories and confront their own personal demons by taking a step out of their comfort zones to challenge fears and insecurities and, with the encouragement of camaraderie, run into the sea together.

"There was a young lady from Bude,
Who went to the beach in a mood.
After getting undressed,

She was feeling less stressed.
You can't beat a dip in the nude!"
(PB, inaugural dipper 2019!)

Ever felt like doing something a little out of your comfort zone? Perhaps wondered what it would feel like to dip more than just your toes?

Get #NudeinBude with the South West Skinny!

 But why a Skinny Dip?!
Everyday tensions provoke the physical stress response of releasing hormones to help us out of a sticky situation.
No longer needing to fight or escape a wild animal, modern life often no longer provides us with the opportunity to release these hormones from our bodies in the way in which they were designed to support.
Therefore stress hormones linger within us, causing all manner of imbalances within our body.

Studies have revealed that immersing yourself into cold water, whilst initially activating a stress response; can help to reduce the levels of stress hormone in your body.

“It has long been known that outdoor exercise and the companionship of fellow swimmers can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.” Dr Chris van Tulleken, University College London.
